For passionate followers of Maserati, the trident is a symbol of the company's three-pronged approach to building sports cars: vivid driving experience, superior technology, and hand-crafted luxury. But maybe that isn't the full the story. Enter a palazzo in Bologna Italy...
These days, Maserati is based in Modena, Italy, but that’s simply home to the Orsi family, who took over the company in 1937. Originally, that company was based in the hometown of the Maserati brothers : Bologna.
Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto Maserati began building cars in 1914, but is was not until 1920 when they pinned their brand to the now-iconic Trident. A friend, Marquis Diego de Sterlich, suggested they borrow the trident from the Fountain of Neptune at the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna. Neptune's Trident when then forever tie their cars to their hometown of Bologna.
Neptune (Poseidon in Greek reckoning), was the God of the ocean, and was thought to embody strength and vigor. The Maserati brothers considered this an excellent reason to use his trident as a symbol of their brand. So, while the status itself is from the mid 16th century, it still today represents the founding vision and ongoing development of the Maserati brand.
